Roadtrip: Visit Bundaberg, gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef

Situated a 4-hour drive north of Brisbane and 3-hours from the Sunshine Coast, the Bundaberg Region has so much to offer.

Weave through fields of agricultural which combined, form one of Australia's greatest food bowls. Paddock to plate experiences are aplenty in the region. Pick your own strawberries at Tinaberries in the spring or enjoy fresh fruity ice creams all year round. Grab some ginger bites, pickled ginger, or tumeric from Bunda Ginger. Or, for a combined experience, stop in at Indulge Cafe and enjoy a seasonal breakfast or lunch menu featuring food that's nurtured, picked and prepared by local producers. The drinks are also world famous in Bundaberg. In addition to the Bundaberg distillery - the famed birthplace of Bundaberg Rum, there's a number of other breweries and gin and cider distilleries in the region.

Once your belly is full, a lazy afternoon at the beach might be just what the Doctor ordered. Choose from a range of absolutely picturesque beaches which provide offshore access to the southern most point of the Great Barrier Reef. Four of the best beach locations include Woodgate, Elliott Heads, Bargara and Moore Park Beach. Offshore, you'll also find Lady Elliott Island and Lady Musgrave Island.

Bundaberg is also the place turtles call home. You'll find loggerhead turtle nesting occurs from Elliott Heads to Moore Park Beach with a dedicated turtle experience at Mon Repos. Here you'll discover the marine education centre featuring interactive displays and seasonal tours for turtle nesting and hatching.

Stay a while

Two of the best locations to stay and explore the Bundaberg region are Elliott Heads and Moore Park Beach.

Elliott Heads Holiday Park

With a picture perfect outlook, Elliott Heads Holiday Park is at the southern end of Bundaberg and a 20 minute drive to the CBD.

Featuring turquoise waters and bright white sands, paddle boarding, kit-surfing, snorkelling and long walks or rides along the foreshore are all favourite past times. With a peaceful setting and an easy pace, Elliott Heads is the ideal spot to slow down.

With family cabins, a new camp kitchen, new amenities block and outdoor projector area for movie nights, the facilities at Elliott Heads Holiday Park are some of the best available.

Moore Park Beach Holiday Park

An absolute beachfront location surrounded by parklands, Moore Park Beach Holiday Park is located in a quite seaside village.

Just 18kms from Bundaberg, Moore Park boasts almost 20km of golden sandy beach. The very northern end of the beach is used for 4WDing while, the southern end is patrolled by Surf Life Savers in the summer months.

If you're visiting during the warmer months, you may even be lucky enough to spot one of the many loggerhead sea turtle nesting sites on the beach. The beach is also great for fishing and offers some of Queensland's most spectacular sunsets.

Accommodation options include cabins, camping and caravan sites while the amenities boast a camp kitchen, pool and laundry.
